CARNARVON SCHOOL v. FOXTON SCHOOL.

Yesterday a cricket match was played on the Foxton State School ground between teams representing the above schools, resulting in a win for the Cornarvon representatives by 24 runs on the first innings. The game requires no detailed report In the first innings the Carnarvon boys had much the best of it, running up a rapid score of 48 "without turning a hair." while the Fqxtonians were able to compile only a poor 24. The Foxton boys were nnable for some time to get over the astonishment occasioned in their minds by the 'phenomenal size' and precocious appearance of the Carnarvon schoolboys (?), who indeed afforded a remarkable object lesson on the forcing qualities of. the Carnarvon beef, mutton, and During the game frequent remarks were overheard as to the rave opportunity there must be out Carnarvon way for Mr McCloskey or Mr Keen, our local tonsorial artists, to open branches in the shaving line, if the present depression in Foxton continues after the holidays. In the second innings, however, the alarm having subsided, the Carnarvon boys were dismissed for 27! and Foxton went (o the wickets resolved " to do or die," with a decided preference fox doing. And they were doing remarkably, well, having put together 27 for'the loss of 2 wicket?, when time was called and the strangers were declared the. winners on the first innings This was rather hard .lack for the local boys, as the .game looked very like theirs, if it could have been played out. But they took' their defeat well enough under' the circumstances, hoping for " better luck next time." The visitors were hospitably entertained by the local boys, and expressed heSrtily their sense of the good treatment they had received.
