The Athletic Sports

Committee— Messrs T. P. Williams, H. Bradcock, 0. V. Furrie, J. R. Stansell, P. Dudson, J. Ahevn, R. Cawston, W. Gerbes, H. Border, F. E. Jenks, B. Spelman, F. Young, L. Proctor, and E. S. ■ Thynne.

Secretary — P, E. Jenks Treasurer— E. S. Thynne.

The Committee who initiated and ran the Sports held on the racecourse yesterday deseived great credit for the excellent meeting they secured and the pleasant day's outing they gave The day was all that could be wished for. fine* though it had rained heavily and steadily all Sunday and part of Sunday night, without any wind, and warm, till late on in the afternoon when there was a decided touch of frost in the atmosphere. The attendance, with the youngsters, uiust have been well on for 300. The events were run to time, and the whole work of the day ran quietly and regularly. One of the hardest worked men was the honorary secretary, Mr Jenks. He maintained his position to the last and speaks well of the promptness of the competitors in their business with him. The judge, Mr Phillip Dudson, had no close finishes to worry him, that is to say, that though the racing was good, yet the winner was easily picked out. Messrs T. P. Williams and John Whyte acted as starters and got all the men fairly away. Mr Bradcock officiated as clerk of the course and lent a hand whenever and wherever required. The Foxton .Btjtss Band lcindly gave their services and played a number of selections during the day. The ladies graced tho course in good numbers, and it was evident that a day's sport of this description is very popular. The Committee very thoughtfully provided a number of toys 'for the very little mites to compete for, and Mrs Furrie, and Messrs Stewart, Musgrove and Watson kindly managed this portion of tho fun. There is no doubt but that the racecourse is the most convenient place to hold sucb..gatherings, and thie. Committee are obliged to the Foxton Eacing Club for the use of it. At another gathering it would be as well to take energetic step 3to have the whole of the " straight " kept clear, as it is done for horaeracing, the public yesterday, after the few fist races, again crowding up upon the runners. We have no doubt but that this will in futyre be. seen to. . From the grand 'Stand* r ati excellent view, excepting the contest for the hop, step and jump, was obtained of the racing. The t\fo most marked events of the day were the running and jumping of Bailey, and the walking of young May; -'Bailey took the majority of the prizes. May's walking, at a distance, appeared like running, but on & : close. . examination we think there Vas no doubt it was whit is termed walking. The privilege holders, barring the " gates," did not do well, but Host CawMon was not put out, but acted most liberally, inviting the b*and and officials to a free lunch. , The following is the record of the events :— 1.
