THE UNION COMPANY.
The Hon. G. M'Lean has received a cable from the manager « f the Australian United Steam Navigation Company at Brisbane, stating that the position of that company is now practically independent, and success was assured, The company, the message states, is now running nine steamers, and p'enty of free labour is offering. It is stated that since tbe begin in_- ot the strike non Union laborin Lyttnlten has loaded some 4500 tons of cargo and discharged over, 1500* A private syndicate at Kamo, Whangarei, undertakes to supply the Northern Steamship Company with coal from the Hikurangi field seven miles distant. All the available dray-; in the district wi 1 be put into requisition. If tbe dray traffic terminates at Kamo Station the '•"ailway hands will probably go out. The Unionists ate quite certain they will *top the coal reaching Whangarei. It is understood, at the present, time, the Union Company have mo> c officers than they know what to do with, aud that a number of hotel waiters have shipped as -towards. The Union Company are now running 23 of their -steamer*.
