STRE ET LAMPS.

I TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATC HERALD. Silt — Ou pissing down the main str et |on Friday evening last, I could see there was something different in the aspect, of the street. For some time I was (ruzzled. and then I discovered that iwo of tho rail way lamps along the line were lit up. This was done, I suppose, because our ener getic (? * railway officials knew that a special train was expected with the Commissioners on b.iard, and they hoped chat the Commissioners would by the "dim glim"* of the two lamps be able to see their way across* the ra Is to Whyte's without fear of falling and breaking their legs. Of course it does aot matter for ordinary mortal** at all f hey cau fall and hurt their ---hios as mu«*h as they like, but of course it would not do for a Cjinmissimer *o bruise himself. However, the lighting of the streets is a matter that might well be taken in hand by tho local body. Now that there is such v large amount of funds that that intelligent body can vote a sum of money yearly for the lease of a section for a road, und can afford to put £100 culverts down iv bye roads, they surely cau find a few pouuds for tho erection of a fow mora lamps aloin the township I would suggest that three lamps might with advantage be placed between the railway st^ion and Burr's corner, two or thiee down the Avenue, and one out the railway line, at the corner of th.stroet. at tbo back of Mr Cummerfield's The lighting of tho lamp-* could c isily be arranged for, for a few shillings a week.
