SOCIAL AT GRASSMERE

A very 'Successful social evening was held in Grassmcre School on Friday last, the occasion being a farewell to Miss Mead, the local teacher, who is -leaving the district to be married. Over fifty people sat down to supper, which was much enjoyed by all. The chairman of the committee, Mr J. Reid, on behalf of the local residents, presented Miss Mead with one dozen stainless knives, one dozen forks, and a set of aluminium kitchenware. He said that the residents of Grassmere were very sorry, to lose Miss Mead, who was much "esteemed by all and loved by the children; and he assured her of their sincere good wishes for her future. Mr Lucas responded. A feature of the evening was the programme of music rendered by local talent. Songs were contributed by Mesdames Gavin, Glucyas, A. C. Reid, Blackburn, and J. Reid; Misses Woodgate and Reid; and "Messrs Stewart, Beamsley, J. Reid, IX Wheeler, and Woodgate. The chairman called for three cheers for Miss Mead and Mr Lucas, which were heartily given; and the singing of "They are jolly good fellows" and "God Save the King" brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
