OBITUARY

JOHN BAT'fY

The death' of Mr John Batty, an old and esteemed settler in Marlboraugfcj occurred yesterday morning at his residence, Blenheim. Mr Batty, who was 81 yc;\rs of age, had been ailing at intervals for some months,'and, though the end came •somewhat suddenly, it had been realised for some time, that his long life was near to its eletee. The deceased was born at Burton-in-Lamdnlaj and come out to New Zealand by the ship "Goleonda," landing at Nelson in December, 1863. He proceeded to "Westpori with. Captain Whitwcll in the first steamer that visited the West Cqast. Engaging in sheep farming ;he hold successively the managership at LangridgOj LeefieldI.' '"Avohdalo, Glen'lee, and Upoot stations. Then he took up farming on his own account^ being at 3lfmd Ritro-r for about twenty years and at Springlands for a lengthy period. Finally he acquired a- p'oporty in the' Lower Wairaai district, .and; having Worked this ; for some years, retired from .active life. His wife predeceased him in March, 1918. His. eldest son, Mr Thomas Batty, died several years ago,, and he is survived by two sons and three ■daughters.
