MARLBOROUGH'S PORT
FUTURE OF PICTON
In reference to the intei-vicw with Mr Will Lawson, organiser of the Onward Marlborough movement, 'Mr J. W. Perano draws attention to an important point which was not touched upon by Mr Lawson. This concorns the future of Picton as the first and last port of call of steamers • arriving from and suiling for Australia. With the South Island Main Trunk line completed, passengers for the South Island would be landed vat Picton and would reach their homes by rail very much sooner than they do at present, while the steamer would proceed to Wellington with her North island passengers.
, Another point stressed by Mr Perano was that cargo for points in the South Island and for ports on the West Coast of the North Island, could be transhipped at Marlb6roug\h's port, instead of all of it being v transhipped in Wellington. There is no valid reason why this should not be done at present, so far a,i transhipments by coastal steamers are concerned.
