BUTCHERS' STRIKE
FINES IMPOSED
AUCKLAND, Nov. 18
Two butchers on strike who were arrested during the disturbance yesterday and subsequently bailed out by the secretary of the Butchers' Union were charged first with using insulting behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and, secondly, that they wrongfully watched the shop with intent to prevent a man from doing what he had a legal right to do, namely, working. There was a large gathering of strikers in the precincts of the Court. A somewhat warm discussion took place between the Magistrate and counsel as to the request made by counsel for an adjournment of the cases, which was opposed by tho police. Eventually the case was adjourned until the afternoon, when fines of £5 were imposed for the charge relating to a breach of tho peace. The other charge was adjourned for a week. The position as regards the strike is unchanged. Although another shop opened this morning and the employers regard the position as highly satisfactory, there is some talk of a conference between the employers and the union, and that, failing a conference, the slaughtermen may take some action.
