CORRESPONDENCE

TO XHB EDITOK
Sir,—lt was to be expected that when the Second Division, which naturally contains a larger number df wealthy and influential persons of military 'age titan the First, was about to be called up, someone would be found to voice the question of limiting the number of men who should be seiit from the Dominion. The expected has happened, .Messrs Corry and McCallum having expressed opinions on the necessity for a maximum, leaving .to »he wisdom of . our legislators the intricate problem whether or not NewvZealand should be called on to^mane- equaj.; sacrifice in the cause of liberty with the sections of Europe suffering under militarist and plutocratic oppression. I wish to point out that we are rapidly approach ng the same quota as the United Kingdom in proportion to our population, the figures being as nearly as I can find them: New Zealand 8 per cent., United Kingdom 9 per cent., .at the present -time.- It peems needless to point out that Mr MeCallum's estimate of what should be tlie limit of New Zealand's effort has been exceeded many months muo, and it is to be hoped that when the question, arises in Parliament re will show as .much determination in behalf of the wives and mothers of the Dominion as he has shown against- the attempt. to "rob a poor man of his f beer. _ '■■-.' :'.'■' ... , .-. bIGJNJiiA.
