We made an important advance on a front of four miles and over a mile in depth. We capturedv a series of strong defensive systems on both banks of the Souchez River, covering Lens. We gained the whole of our objectives and infljeted considerable casualties. Our losses were slight., The enemy's positions were of great strength arid tactical and strategicimportance. . They are now in our ft hands.
