MANY VILLAGES IN RUINS
(Received Jan. 15, 0.20 a.m.) ROME; Jan. 14. The shock was felt from Ancona to 'Naples at eight o'clock on Wednesday morning. Eighty buildings ' were damaged in Rome. The colonnade of St. Pejfcer's suffered considerably, and 150 window^ were shattered1 in. the 'Basilica.I.- v ;.. ■'■'■■■"■.■..''
' .The shock was severely felt at the iVatican. Thi© Pope invited everybody to pray.
The column of Marcus Aurelius was broken in various places, amd the bas-relief was irreparably damaged.
The effects in the provinces were* severe. Reports of many deaths and many wounded are coming from all parts.
Th© shock lasted 70 seconds. At Naples one palace suffered severely.
Arezzano was completely destroyed, and also !all the buildings in the surrounding country.'.-'The bulk of the 800 survivors were injured.
_ Maaiy villages are in-.ruins, and relief has been sent.
