SOCIAL EVENTS. The social promoted/by the members of the staifs of the. Public Works and Railway Departments stationed at Ward was held on-'Friday / evenin.g, and was attended by about 200 people. The arrangements made by v the committee weire very complete, and an enjoyable evening was spent^_ The ladies who had1 charge-of the supper arrangements 'provided a / splendid supper, and the ihusje supplied by the Flaxbourne orchestra was v pto its usual high standard. Messrs A. C Brown arid A. France (as MC.'s.t ami Mr J. R. Marks (hon. secretary) carried out their duties efficiently, and the floor was in good ovder for dancing^ As a. result of the good attendance the hall funds will probably benefit considerably. A committee of bachelor residents ('with Mr. J. S. Jenkins as, hon. sec.) .'', bus.arrangements in hand for a bachelors' ball to be held on August 15. It is intended to ei.rol as many bachelors in the district as possible on the members' list; to extend a& many outride invitations as space in the liall will allow, and to fix a charge ~ for bachelors who are not members. The new hall evidently fills a longfelt want, an d_ is likely to .be in frequent use this winter.
