AN ANGRY SCENE

AT MEETING OF CREDITORS

[Press Association.]

HAMILTON, June 19. An angry scene occurred at a meeting of creditors in the estate of James L. McGregor, a land agent at Hamilton. The liabilities showed £2662 and the assets (house and furniture) £150. Bankrupt's father (Alexander McGregor, of Masterton) was the biggest creditor, with a claim for £496. Bankrupt stated that undue pressure brought by his father had compelled him to file. Questioned regarding a motor-car on which £76 was owing, and which he had assigned to his father under a threat of being seized, the Assignee said that the act, if proved, brought the bankrupt under the penal clause. An angry scene followed, when the father's solicitor moved a vote of sympathy. Vendors of the car said that they would leave the meeting if the motion was put. They eventually stormed out of the meeting, calling out "No quorum; no meeting." Subsequently it was decided not to take action under the penal clause.
