ST. MARY'S v. SWIFTS
On Saturday St. Mary's and Grovetown Swifts met on the Domain. The same was fairly even, but most of the play was shared between the two defences. St. Mary's caused the visitors some anxiety by scoring the first goal a few minutes before halftime. The ball rebounded off one of the Grovetown backs, and rolled over the line just out of the reach of the goal-keeper, who made \ a good attempt to save. It was ' twenty minutes in the second spell. before G Hove town equalised, under | wreeisely the same circumstances as their opponents, Gill taking a long, ! well-judged shot, the foroe of which caused the ball to rebound off the. g;oal-keeper on to one of his comrades and thonce into the corner of the posts. Gill should have scored again; but he put the ball just over the cross-bar with terrific force. The irame terminated in a draw, one goal each. Mr W. Phippsrefereed. i
A start was made with the painting of the steeple of St. Mail's Church this morning. A low scaffold .had been erected on the iroof of the building, and from this an extension ladder ■was placed against the top of the tower. A block and tackle weix* then, made fast to tli© cross at the top, and to-day a painter vyas to be seen .sitting on a board working away as though he were only a few feet from the ,ccgaii22/3
