PICTON.

[fkom our cobivespondent:] Friday,

CHILDREN'S DANCE. At the invitation of his Worship the Mayor and Mrs Riddell, the children of the town were entertained at a fancy-dress dance in the* Albert Hall on Wednesday evening. There were fully two hundred children present, half of whom were in fancy costumes, and a more charming spectacle has never previously been witnessed in the town. Parents, of course, were present in full force, and were interested' spectators throughout. A number of ladies and gentlemen mingled with the little ones on the dancing floor, and kept the fun going from seven till eleven. - A ladies' committee was appointed to select the best-dressed boys and girls, for whom prizes were allotted, and they had a very unenviable task, the costuming of the majority being praiseworthy in the extreme. The children gaining the judges' verdict.were as follows, and as each name was called out the winners were greeted with applause: —Misses Myrtle Brisco ("Eastern Lady"), Dorothy Arthur ("Robina Oruso"), Isabel Bush ("Red Riding Hood"), Masters Lyndon Lucena ("Grey Moth"), Seymour Scott ("Dutohie"), and Allison Lambert ("Indian"). Music was supplied by Bush's orchestra, and several extras were played by -the i ladies. After a bountiful supper, the children were sent home to bed, and the adultSj to the number of over a hundred, took the floor, and danced until two o'clock. During the evening, his Worship the Mayor (Mr Riddell) took the opportunity, in behalf of the executive, of heartily thanking one and • all who had helped in any way towards the great success of "New Zealand Day." "THE WANDERERS." A musical society has been formed in Picton, to be called "The Wanderers." Mr Percy Gooke has been appointed conductor, and, as the principal vocalists' of the town have signified their intention of joining, a successful future is anticipated.
