MATTER OF MR NEILSEN'S

LETTER

WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. Regarding the New South Wales political situation, Speaker Willis, in an interview with, an Evening Post reporter, said that a telegram was forwarded to him at Auckland by the CTerk of the Assembly, and sent on to him at Wellington, stating that a letter was given to "the captain of a steamer coming from San Francisco with instructions to hand it to him personally. That letter was from Mr JS^-n -T he caPtain- finding tnat he (Mr Willis) was absent from the State, delivered the letter to the Clerk of the Assembly. He knew nothing as to the contents of the letter, which would reach him on his return to Sydney If had received! it here he would have no jurisdiction. When he reached Sydney the resignation would be accepted, and the election would take place in due course.
