AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.

MR NEILSEN'S RETIREMENT

RESIGNATION STILL UNOPENED

WAITING SPEAKER WILLIS'S

RETURN

[press association.] (Received Jan. 16, 9.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 16. Mr Neilsen, in a letter dated "San Francisco, December 7th," addressed to the Yass electors, announces that ho has ceased to represent them and that his resignation, to take effect from January 15th, is in the hands of Speaker Willis. He gives as reasons for his resignation the fact of a disagreement with "his party on ::. vital matter, and; that he had decided' to retire from politics. Supposedly Mr Neilsen's letter is among the Speaker's unopened correspondence at Parliament House, and it cannot be opened or the seat vacated till Mr "Willis returns from New Zealand.

There is much comment in Liberal circles over Mr Willis departing when he knew that the resignation was in transit.
