AMUSEMENTS.

WTKEHAM NABLE COMEDY COMPANY.

The opening production of musical comedy by the, above popular combination will take place at His Majesty s theatre on Monday August 26, when the "Belle of Newport" will be staged. This merry mixture of mirth and music is recognised as the funniest comedy seen for years, rivalling m mirth-provolcing qualities the famous "Charley's Aunt." The New Zealand Times, in a notice of the piece, said: "We have had several 'Belles of New York,' the one from 'Cuba/ and also the charming..young lady from Brittany, but the latest one is easily the best of the bunch. It is farce comedy at its best, depending mainly on > its humor, a tissue of intricate complications, and an extravagance of mendacity invented with a monumental coolness and audacity. Such things are rendered doubly ludicrous by their characterisation, and in this, respect, the Wykeham-Noble Company are eminentW resourceful." On Tuesday, August 27, "Who's William" will be staged. The box plan will be opened for the two nights on August 22nd at Parker's.

HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE.

The programme presented in His Majesty's Theatre last night attracted a popular audience, which appre- ■ ciated both the subject matter and th© mechanical merit of the produc- ! tions. To-night there will be a com- | plete. chang© of pictures, chief ■! amongst which is the grand historical I war film "The Victoria Cross," or j "The Charge of the Light Brigade." j Showing the heroism of a. young ; British officer^ the winning of his ; spurs and the commandiing officer's ■ daughter, and his decoration by ! Queen Victoria with the Victoria i Cross for distinguished bravery, the ! subject presents a; thrilling story. The , Vita-graph Company, of America, '• hay© introduced and reproduced this ' stirring event in accordance with the > poetic and- artistic., grandeur of j Tennyson's famous poem. Amongst tb& other pictures may, be mentioned a star drama, "Then YouMl Remem- : Ber Me,' 5 and another : drama, ."The. | 'G&as;:wm> Suifer;" John Bunny T theI stottt comedian of the Vitagraph Company, again figures in a comedy called "Bunny ajidl the Twins." In j this picture he is said to bo even funnier than he was in "Stenographer Wanted."

"ATTACKED BY A LION."

The _ thrilling incidents depicted! in the picture shown in the current series of animated pictures at the Town Hall Will be (screened for the last time to-night. It is doubtful if anything quite so sensational has been thrown upon the screen before. Picture lovers who delight in the daring of sensational feats of horsemanship and-rapid excitement should! not'miss to-night's final screening. The new portion of the programme contains him stories of more than usual interest. One in particular, "The Lesser Evil," left a vivid impression with the audience last night. The plot is worked on the action of a band* of smugglers and the kidnapping of a girl. A feature- was the fine1 portrayal of the girl in the incident. When redirced to the last shot she chooses to die rather than fall into tlie hands of til© drunken horde of smugglers.- The balance of the series is well up to the British Picture Company's standard. On Sunday night after church hours ' a programme of pictures will be shown. The moral photo-pJay, "Honor thy Father,". 2600 feet in length, will be shown next week. Marlboroughtown is to be visited on Monday, evening.
