THE DAVIS CUP

AUSTRALASIAS TEAM,

So far Norman Brookes, the'- sol© selector for the Davis Cup team, has nob given any signs of 'what players are to be selected to defend the Davis Clip- Brookes must be one, of course; then comes the question whois. the next best, singles player in Australasia. Before Stan Boust went to England, he beat all comers (Brookes did not play), and on that is reckoned to- deserve consideration. But Do list is generally considered a better doubles player, and, as he ha,s not done oversell in singles in England, he may have to giv© place to E. W. 'Heath,'the •;Vic;torian player. Yet again'!/ : Di;. Sharp, of New-.South Waleo, iclainis' attention, and Whilst he and Heath can be placed about equal in singles play, there is no doubt that Sh^rp' is the better doubles player. ; lit ground shots; the two players.' in question are about alike, but. .-.Sharp is a''much more severe . and, sure volley or; in fact, he .is overhead vastly superior. Then, again, the American service in all its details carries no message of fear, as he can handle it .with almost .perfect confi-r ci.once. Since mentioning the Victorian player,... Addison as one likely to find a glace in the team; it[ has hoen discovered that he is not1 over strong physically, yet he'ithotf is Brookes, so,, perhaps that may I nob wreck his chance. A. W. Dunlop, the Victorian, who is at present abroad, may not return until the middle of December, which, of course, v/ould debar him, as he could not be in condition or form for such a contest as the Davis Cup. Yet should Ik? return earlier there is no one more fit to defend iv the doubles with Brookes than Dunlop. Campbell, of Victoria, has also l*een spoken of, "but much will depend upon his form during the next few months as to whet-he*' lie catches the eye of the selector or not. Nothing has been said re any New Zealand player so far, yet J. C. Peacock, the present holder of the New Zealand Championship, should deserve consideration.
