"I have jumped off tho Admiralty Pier at Dover completely clothed, including a thick winter great-coat," he adds, "and I found no difficulty in swimming. Cold bathing in winter will not, of course, do for a man whose liver is sluggish or whose heart in weak. As I had to lead a sedentary life it must: not be supposed that a-t any time I was an athlete; on the contrary, I was never very strong, and I mention this solely for the purpose of stowing tliat with the exercise of common prudence silmost overy youth can do what I was in the habit of doing."
