FLOODS AT NELSON

WASHOUTS ON THE RAILWAY

NELSON, Sept. 19. Three days of almost continuous heavy rain caused flooded rivers and some damage. Portions of the lowlying country in Nelson were inundated' for a time, and some of the manholes of the drainage system burst. The river and brook have also done^some damage to the recent work of fne beautifying society. At Collingwood the Stony Point red light beacon was carried away. At Nelson the 4.30 train is yet unable to proceed with safety beyond Tapawera, owing to wash-outs on the line, and passengers who were booked for further stations were found lodgings for the night. It is not probable that this morning's train will get beyond Tapawera. The Wairoa and Waiiti Rivers are over the banks, and communication between Brightwater and Waimea is cut; off temporarily. At Wakefield there is three feet of water and. Burns's brewery and the tennis court have been swamped. The approaches

to Pretty bridge have been undermined and communication with Belgrove and the main road cut off. The coach from Nelson to Blenheim had to turn back at Tua Marina, owing to the floods. The rain has now ceased and a cold snap has set in, with snow on the lulls.
