ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET

[press association.] CHRISTCHURCH!, March 15. At the Addington stock market today there were large entries of stores, though they were not up to last week's, numbers. There was a very good demand, for store sheep, which were of better quality than last week. Fat lambs and fat ewes eased still further in price. Fat cattle; also dropped back in value. The entry of pigs was large, and the market was weaker. There was a poor sale for store cattle, but good dairy cows were in demand.

The entry of store sheep was, as stated, not so large as last week, there being a smaller proportion or oversea sheep offered. The quality showed an improvement, and consequently better classes sold rather better than at recent sales. Backward sheep were, on the other hand, dull of sale in consequence of continued dry weather and shortage of feed. Good ewes were firmer; best rape lambs made 9s to 10s 6d, medium 6s 9d to.9s, and small 5s 3d to 6s 6d; best forward locally-bred wethers to 13s. and smaller to lls 6d; small halfbred wethers in low condition 8s 4d to 9s 4d, and North Island wethers to 10s. Four and six-tooth ewes 12s 9d to 16s; medium two-tooths 12s to 13s, four-tooths 14s 6d to 16s 3d; two and four-tooths 13s to 14s; oversea twotooth ewes 10s to lls 3d; six and eight-tooths 7s 6d to 10s 6d, and small sorts 5s to 8s 6d..

There was an entry of 5242 fat lambs, of fair to medium quality. In the early part of the sale the market was somewhat excited by the operations of two outside speculators; but afterwards prices eased off, and compared with last week's values showed a further decline owing to unfavorable reports regarding future prospects at Home. There were 4588

taken for export at 9s to "1.6s 6d,'J 139 by butchers at 11s 6d to i3s 8d; and 520 were passed at 12s 3d to 13s 7d, some of these being afterwards taken by export buyers. The yarding of fat sheep was much smaller than of late, and was chiefly, made.up of medium and inferior ewes. There were a few lines of good wethers, but the bulk were light sorts. Wethers and prime ewes maintained their values, but secondclass and aged ewes showed a further decline. The tange of prices was: Prime wethers 16s to 18s 9d, lighter 12s to 15s 6d; prime ewes 12s 6d to 16s, medium 9s 6d to 12s, aged and light 5s 3d to 9s. Tnere were 337 head of fat cattle yarded, and the quality was very good all round. The demand, owing to the larger offering, was not active, and values receded to the extent of 2s per 1001b. Steers made £7 15s to £rJl2s 6d, heifers £-5 2s 6d to £9 15s, and cow& £5 td £11—equal to 23s 6d to 29s 6d for prime, 23s to 25s for medium, and 20s to 22s 6d for cow and inferior per 100 lb. A small entry of veal calves made 4s 6d to 525. A line of 55 steers from. Messrs Pratt Bros, St. James station, made £8 17s 6d to'£l2. # . 4 small yarding of inferior store cattle met with "a dull sale, yearlings making 25s to 375, 15 to 18-months 40s to 445, two-year steers £3 13s, two-year heifers £2 15s, three-year steers £5 10s to £6 ss, three-year heifers £4 10s 8d to £6 ss, and dry cows 33s to £3 14s. Dairy cows sold at £3 6s to £9 ss. There was a very large yarding or pigs, and the demand was slack, especially for unfinished baconers, which sold at id to |d per lb below well-finished lots. Choppers .made up to 60s, large baconers 42s 6d to 475, and smaller 35s to 40s (equal to 3£d to' 4d per lb); large porkers 26s ,to 345, and'smaller 22s to 25s (equal to 4d to 4£d per lb). The entry of store pis;s was beyond the demand, and the sale was an acceptionally poor one, a l&Y«e number being passed. Lame sto^fts made 18s to1225, smaller 14s to 17s, and weaneris' 2s 6d to "6s.
