Captain R. Stewart, late of the Takapuna, has given up the sea, and has taken over the Club Hotel at the Bluff.

The Rev. Wm. Lee, the newly appointed minister for the Methodist Church at Picton, is the fatK'er of Mrs Richards, wife of the Rev. T. R. Richards, of iilenheim.

Advices have been received in Melbourne of the death of Sir Malt colm MaeEacharn, formerly Lord Mayor, at Cannes during a yachting cruise in the Mediteranean. Death occurred suddenly from heart failure; after a long illness. Lady MaeEacharn was present at her husband's deathbed,

Frank E. Beaurepaire, the Australasian distance swimming champion, accompanied by Mr R. M. Coliins, honorary secretary of the Victorian Amateur Swimming Association, left for London by the R.M.S. Mahva from Melbourne last week. Beaurepaire is travelling as a second-class passenger, with sxiffjcient money, subscribed by the public, at his disposal for incidental expenses.

Word has been received in Blenheim of the death of Mr Charles Mitchinson at Wellington. The late Mr Mitchinson was well-known in Blenheim, where he resided for some time. He was a notable exponent of Rugby, and athletic circles will remember his prowess in every department of sport. He had been seriously ill for a long time, and his end was not unexpected. While bathing last year he sustained an injury to his spine, from the effects of which he never recovered. Many friends in Blenheim will regret the death of a line fellow and a good sportsman.
