A PROVIDENTIAL ESCAPE.

RAILWAY DISASTER JUST

AVERTED

[PBESS ASSOCIATION.]

MELBOURNE, March 10. A thrilling escape from a disaster occurred to a passenger train travelling at night between the Clifton Hill and Merri stations. The train had just left the former station, and was approaching an iron bridge, without coping, spanning a chasm sixty feet deep. The driver felt a thump, and stopped the train. He found that the leading wheels of the engine had left the rails. They were within eighteen inches of the edge of the bridge when the train was stopped.
