THE SCULLING SUPREMACY.

' FINAL DEPOSITS PAID. [ - | TRAINING OPERATIONS OF THE MEN. [press association.] WANGANUI, June 15. The final deposits of £300 per man were lodged with the stakeholders in the Arnst-Webb match to-day. Both men continue to do good work, and report themselves as being very well. Arnst does much more work in the river than Webb, who is fit, and his supporters are confident that he will be fit to row the race of his life next Tuesday. It is generally understood that Webb put up a remarkably fine trial over the full course on Sunday, though the time has not leaked out. Whelch made the pace at the start, but was left in the rear after going a mile, the ex-champiori continuing at practically the same pace to the end of the second mile. At the bend Green picked him up, but Webb soon drew right away, rowing 26 to the minute* and finishing with a splendid burst over the last 200 yds, striking 29. The way he sculled down the home stretch greatly impressed the touts, his very strong finish denoting that he is perfectly sound and well. After passing the post he waited for Green and Whelch, and then the three paddied down-stream to Aramoho, four miles. Webb was out \ on the lower course yesterday, covering a mile and sprinting with Whelch. He will do the rest of his rowing on the lower course.

Arnst put in very solid work on Sunday. Yesterday he came downstream in front of a steamer, rowing very fast for a mile; then, easing up, he finished the course steadily. In the afternoon he was out again, doing long, strong work, with a few sprhtts.r
