At Auckland yesterday, Frank Watt, who was convicted of a criminal offence on a girl -under 16, who committed suicide, received three years' imprisonment.

It is reported that there is a probability of Mr Clayton, veterinary surgeon, who has been in Christchurch, being appointed to take charge of the abattoirs and dairies in the Marlborough, Westland and Nelson districts, which means that he will take over the stock departments in each of those districts. The question that arises in consequence is as to whether he will also control the rabbit inspector, or if that is to be separate and apart from Mr Clayton's jurisdiction.

The footpath along Grove Road where some gas-pipes were recently put down is in a very bad state consequent upon the heavy rains thatfell on Sunday and yesterday. This morning a boot was found stuck in the footpath, presumably having been lost by some person last night. The Dunedin Star states that Mr J. G. Ballard, Inspector of Telegraph Offices (who was at one time Chief Postmaster in Blenheim) will retire on pension at the end of the present month. A general meeting of members of the Harmonic Society was held last night after the practice, Mr J. R. Sharp, Vice-President, in the chair. It was decided to fix the date of the coming concert for July 29, when f'May Day" will be produced, the first portion of the programme consisting of miscellaneous items. Mr Handley gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution prohibiting working members from receiving complimentary tickets, with the view of the issueof two such tickets to each. The motion will come up for discussion at the next meeting. A very good rehearsal was held, and in view of the early date of the concert it is hoped that all members will now attend regularly, in order to ensure the success of the performance.
