For assaulting yesterday Stanley East, a reporter on the Lyttelton Times staff, who, he believed, had written a severe criticism on his objectionable with the Chung Ling Soo Company, Ted Kalman was" today fined £10 and costs. Mr Bishop, S.M., said that the press was a free institution, and had every right to protection in the discharge of its duty. Kalman was a first offender, and had evidently lost his temper. He would not be gent to gaol, but the fine would be made exemplary.
