[PEESS ASSOCIATION.] 1 GISBORNE, May 19. The Borough Council has resolved that in view" of the necessity for a more efficient scheme of land defence •5n the Dominion, and in view of the fact that the Imperial Conference on the question of defence is shortly to Ibe held, to be attended by a representative of New Zealand,'his Worship the Mayor call a public meeting to ascertain definitely the public feeling on the question of defence in this district. ' The reason given was that as Sir Joseph Ward was going Hpm"e to the conference on the matter, it was advisable that he should go backed up by'public^ opinion.
