GOOD EFFECT UPON THE COUNTRY. [press association.] . (Received May 18, 'BJIS a.m.) LONDON, May 17. The Daily Mail states that tho bankers' letter to Mr Asquith produced an effect on the country almost unparalleled. It carried the deeper conviction because of its emanating from financiers of immense knowledge, and experience, and the fact that several of the signatories are prominent freetraders and others strong Liberals. ■ Apart from the wealth of private banks and the authorised capital of others the signatories, represented amounts totalling £213,143,000, of which £55,000,000; is paid up.
