NOW PAID ON THE GREEN COMMODITY.
MINISTER WILL MAKE NO ' ALTERATION.
[press association.] WELLINGTON, May 15. The Minister for Customs (the Hon. Mr Hogg), in reply to.. <&f iw? s P™ as the outcome ot the Chamber, ot Commerce Conference, said tnat _it was impossible, as the law stood, to have cigars weighed when^taken out of bond, so that duty would be paid on the dry commodity instead ot on the green. He was willing to bring in a Bill to amend the Act in the direction suggested. .-■■ ' . The Minister could not agree to issue fuller statistical information. However, a monthly statement ot duties was now prepared, ,but not published. If it would be of any service to merchants arrangements could be made for its appearance m the Gazette.
