AN EFFICIENCY-CUM-CHEAP-
NESS SCHEME
[press association.] WELLINGTON, May 14. Careful consideration is being given by the Government to the police force with a view to maintaining the >equired efficiency upon the most economical basis. The expansion of the Dominion necessarily requires increasing police protection. The increases have amounted to an average of £11,000 each year since 1904. If the Government are able, while maintaining the necessary efficiency, to make reductions in the present expenditure it is intended to reduce the average increase by. at least fourfifths, or a reduction of about £8000 on the amount of the previous year. Later. It is now stated that the saving jn connection with the police will be about £9000 per year.
