RETURNS OF BRANUH LINES
MAKING THE SERVICE PAY
[press association.] CHRISTCHTJRCH, May 13. The Hon. Mr Millar, replying to adeputation asking that the second train on the Methven line should be resumed, gave no hop© of anything, of the kind. He said that returns were now being made of every branch line, and where it was not paving the service would be reduced. Five trains had already been stopped, and others would be put on the. same basis. If Parliament did not support his recommendations the consolidated revenue would have to pay a direct • grant to the Railway Department. He was trying to get the railways on & more payable basis; and was doing what the majority of the people wanted.
