A long technical discussion took place in the House of Commons yes- - terday regarding the duty on foreign beer, cMb licenses and 'duties on land values. Mr Prettyman enumerated eight heavy taxes born© 'by land, and protested against tlie injustice of adding four more when incomes derivable from land wer© 'falling. The real "burden was not on the great landowners :but on the owners of small prop&Vfcies, who did not possess other resources. Mr Lloyd-George accepted Unionist suggestions to change the duty on clubs from threepence in the potfficl on the liquor sold to sixpence an the pound upon the liquor purchased. Mr Mairkhani accused the Government 'df preventing the House of •'Commons from raising the poundage •owing to the fear of the enormous ipolitical'mnuenco in the clubs. Several Members advocated a -poundage equal to the licenses of •jpiiblic-hotises. IMPATIENT COMMONERS. (Received May 13, 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, May 12. "Members of the House of Commons are becoming increasingly angry at "Mr Lloyd-George's tentative and indefinite proposals, and his plea that -the resolution must be passed before -the House is informed what the Finance "Bill contains. Mr Lloyd-George admitted that a tax of threepence in the pound upon sales at clubs could easily be evaded "by increasing the subscriptions. He explained that the impost of sixpence in the pound on purchased liquor would obviate the need to employ a clerk to register sales. He promised to consider Mr Austen Chamberlain's suggestion of a slid-ing-scale.
