BOXING.

WEDNESDAY'S TOURNAMENT

COMPETITORS IN TRAINING

A large crowd of enthusiasts attended by invitation at Mr E. Hurcomb's school last night to witness the training operations in connection with the tournament to be held on Wednesday next. Some interesting bouts were sparred amonsrst the local boys, but the Wellington competitors had not arrived.

R. Dunckley and Paddy Maher were the first to show out. Paddy was in splendid "nick," and will give a good account of himself on Wednesday. His old opponent (Poppleton) was present, but did not strip off. Dunckley has some good points, but fights too open for effect. His condition also leaves something to be desired.

Two strangers to Blenheim (Messrs Niccol and Brown) had three rounds, and made the pace willing. They were mixing things to some considerable purpose. Niccol will be heard of yet amongst the "guns." He has a peculiar baffling style, and a terrific upper-cut,' with any amount of "ginger" behind. Brown was overweighted and over-matched. Dave Watson essayed a bout with Hollis. It seems like old times to see Dave executing the side-step. These ■two did not liurt themselves.

A pretty six-round go. was fought between 'Sainsbury and Hurcomb. Both men are in perfect condition, and Sainsbury has improved out of sight since the last tournament. He is not the same man who fought Wanden. He should have a considerable say against the Wellingtonian on Wednesday night. At times Hurcomb was fairly extended. The bout between Hardy and Hurcomb will be a fine exposition. Both men are in fine "nick, 7* and Hardy is confident of giving a much better account of himself tnis_ time. Hurcomb is in good condition, and last night's spar with Sainsbury greatly pleased his supporters. He was showing a shippy cross, and the upper-cut, so prominent in the last Hardy battle, was conspicuous by its absence. A great deal of interest is being taken in this bout, and it is to be hoped that the interest will culminate in a bumper house. The battle is for a purse of 25 soys. and a side-wager.
