FIRST AID CLASSES.
PUBLIC MEETING.
A public meeting was held in the Council Chambers last evening to consider the practicability of holding "first aid" classes in Blenheim. His Worship the Mayor presided, and there wer ten ladies and three gentlement present. It is to be regretted that more gentlemen were not present, as their help and co-operation are urgently needed to make the classes a success.
His Worship, in a brief speech, explained the objects of the meeting. He also expressed his regret at the small attendance of gentlemen, and thanked Mrs Gillies for the. trouble she had taken in the matter..
Mrs Gillies also briefly explained the object of the classes, and hoped that the men would come forward to the classes as well as her own sex had done. She took occasion to thank Drs Bennett and Adams for having consented to deliver the lectures.
It was decided to hold the men's classes on Wednesday evenings at 8 o'clock and the women's classes in the afternoon at 4 o'clock. The first classes to be held next "Wednesday. Miss Eyes was appointed secretary and Mr W. J. Girling treasurer. At the conclusion of the business Mr Girling proposed that a hearty vote, of thanks be accorded to Mrs Gillies for the interest she had shown in setting the movement on a working footing. He regretted the absence of the men, but football seemed to be the great thing just at present, and he thought that they would have no difficulty in getting twenty members to form the men's class. He also hoped that before long they would have a branch of the- St. John Ambulance Association, of which Blenheim should be the headquarters, instead of being attached to the Wellington branch. The Chairman seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chair brought the meeting to. a close.
