THE BUDGET.

[press association.] (Received Sept: 11, 1 a.m.) HOBART, Sept. 10. The Treasurer's Budget statement shows that the revenue for the current year was £1,004,000, which is £71,500 above the estimate. The expenditure was £912J377. The estimated revenue for next year is £958,879, and the expenditure £946,000; but owing to the expected falling-off in the-amount returned by_ the Commonwealth, the year is estimated to end with a deficit of £24,000. In order to meet the reduced Commonwealth returns, direct taxation in the shape of land income taxes is proposed. The programme for the session includes a Free Education Bill.

The year closed with a snrpins of £75,000. The. deficit, which stood two years ago at £169,000, has been reduced to £37,000.
