AN EXAMPLE.
BREACH OF THE BANKRUPTCY ACT.
YOUNG MAN SENT TO GAOL
["press association.]
PALMERSTON N., Sept. 11. Thos. Gleeson, of Rongotea, who was found guilty in the Supreme Court of a breach-of the Bankruptcy Act by incurring debts without reasonable grounds of being able to pay the same, was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment without hard labour. In refusing probation, Mr Justice Chapman said that the Legislature intended, in cases like the present one, that the accused should be punished with imprisonment. He expressed regret at having to send to prison a young man of presumably good character, but could not set at nought the provisions of the Legislature.
