[press association,] (Received Sept. 10, 10.17 p.m.)
LONDON, Sept. 10
A solemn service in the Cathedral this evening, in the presence of seven thousand people, inaugurated the Eucha'ristio Congress.
Cardinal Vannutelli was received' in state at the door by Archbishop Bourne, and conducted, wearing a scarlet cappu magna, under a lofty canopy of white silk and gold to the high altar. He was attended by a procession of richly-habited cardinals and prelates. Apostolic letters were read appointing Cardinal Vannutellil legate, in which the Pope paid a tribute to an Empire famed for the liberty extended to its citizens, and! to whose authority and laws so many millions of Gatholics render faithful and dutiful obedience.
The legate then entered the pulpit. Speaking in Latin, he acknowledged Britain's hospitality, and offered anexpression of respect to the wise ruler of her destinies and his acknowledgments to those in authority. The Pope, he said, trusted that good results would follow the Congress, and that the divine Eucharist would bo the ultimate means of uniting all in one faith.
The service, in which the music wasi that of modern English composers, concluded with the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
