! A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Mr John i Croker, mate of the steamer Blenheim, died suddenly last night during the voyage of the vessel from Blenheim to Wellington. The deceased was 62 years of age. He loaves a widow and daughter. Ho v. Tas at one time master of the barque Weathersfield. Death is supposed to be due to heart disease. A Press Association telegram from Hokitika states that Mr Alexander Single, aged 78, for 43 years leader of the local Synagogue, died this morning after a brief illness. He was wellknown and\wiclely resonctcd throughout the West Coast. The wife of Mr George Shaw, an old resident of Kanieri. also died last night at an ■•advanco-d age. Thcro have be?-n an unusual number cf deaths of aged j pcopie daring the last mc-jit'h or two, thinning out tha ranks of the old pioneersMr Purser, travailing representative for the International Harvester j Company, who is at present in this district, has just recovered from injuries sustained in the recent Rotorua j railway accident, when part of the J train ran away down a hill, resulting in loss of life. A peculiar circumstance connected with the accident is that a railway porter who was seated in the same carriage with Mr Purser was soon afterwards killed on another Auckland line, owing, however, to his own negligence. Mr Purser's illness was a serious one, and he expects to wear the scars on his head for a long time yet.
