The sum of £1500 has been subscribed at Ayr to erect a memorial to Sir James Fergusson, and create a benevolent fund associated with his name. The Earl of Eglinton and the Duke of Portland have subscribed £100 each. It is hoped that many people in South Australia and New Zealand will 1 assist. •• [Sir James Fergusson was killed in the Jamaica earthquake; he was visiting Kingston with a party of prominent Englishmen at the time. He was appointed Governor and Com-mander-in-Chief of South Australia in 1868, and occupied a similar position in New Zealand from 1873 to 1875.]
