On Saturday las.t a football match vas, played;'at_:Canvastowri between a llai Valley and a Havelock team, and after "a" strong and well-contested game the match resulted.in a draw.

The Qanvastown Debating Society held then- second debate on Saturday jnght. The subject was "Whether woman lias more capacity for happiness than mati." The Rev. Mr Richards took the* chair and opened the meeting by introducing the speakers in a very neat litt-lo speech. The Rev. Mr Btace opened in the affirmative ,_ and in a., very jippropriate speech explained his views on the subject. He was supported by Mr lrvin, of Havelock. Messrs Ball and Spear spoke in the negative, addressing the audience, in an.efficient manner in support of the masculine gender. At the finish of (heir address Mr lrvin took the chair, pnd the Rev. Mr Richards supported the negative, and kept the audience in a roar of laughter. The Rev. Mr Btace replied to the negative in a very feyv wowlfi, and fairly "brought down the house." At the conclusion a show of hands was taken, and the result was ps follows:—Affirmative 34, negative 8.

At Canvastown on Saturday next a hockey match will be played between a team from Havelock and a team from the Kia Ora Club. This should be a good game, as both teams are sure of winning. The Prince of Wales' Birthday was kept up by a football match here between a team from Picton and one from the Oanvastown Club. Throughout the game there was some real good play. The home team played a splendid game, ■ Every man seemed to play in his pitfteo,. At times there was a bit of off-R«de play, and this seemed to bo. the trouble on both sides.. The Waitohi men played a good game, but seemed to b& absolutely outclassed. The scores ware: Canvastown 15 points, Waitohi nil. Notwithstanding the score made by Canvastown, this match was the be.it ever played in Canvastown.
