THE BUDGET STATEMENT.

[press association.] (Received June 7, 10.36 p.m.) LONDON, June 7. Mr Morley's Indian Budget statement was well received.

Mr Morley announced a reduction of half-a-million sterling in the military expenditure. There was one black shadow—the plague—which had claimed 5{ million victims between 1896 and April, 1907.

Mr Morley remarked that a Royal Commission might usefully inquire into centralisation and administrative matters. He announced the establishment of an Advisory Council of notables, the enlargement of Legislative Councils, and the appointment of one or two Indian members of the Council of India in London.
