MoLeod3sand Darling 33 were the only other Australians to make a stand, the whole team being out for 241.
Smith captured six wickets for 27.
Hayward and Hobbs opened tot Surrey, and were together when stumps were drawn with the total at 23.

Surrey resumed the first innings in dull weather and on a slow wicket. Despite this latter fact and the frequent changes cf bowling, they scored freely.
Hobbs and Hayward, the two not outs of the previous day, hit out merrily, and 127 was on the board when Hayward was dismissed for 70.
Hobbs contributed 58 by fine cricket, and 176 was on the sheet when be was dismissed.
Stedman rattled off 62 under an hoar and a half, and when he was caught the total stood at 4 wickets for 230.
