THE MEAT TRADE.
San Francisco, June 25.
The New York Herald of June 7th says : —The Beef Trust is deeply concerned about the announcement cabled through the Premier of New Zealand (Mr Seddon) that that colony is about to make an aggressive fight for the meat trade of Great Britun. To-day the American trust supplies twp-thirds of the fresh beof used in Great Britain. Market reports show that it is selling better grades of beef fifty cents a hundred pounds cheaper in London and Liverpool than in this city. It is not generally understood here that icing is practically unknown in Great Britain. Meat, vegetables and fruit are not kept as here. Exposure would benefit the marketing of none but the best qualities of beef, and that is an addi tional reason for the American Beef Trust picking out the choicest cuts for the foreign market. It is further stated that the New Zealand authorities in* tend to make use of between seventyfive and one hundred packing-houses already available within their borders and pay a fixed sum for each carcase and for killing, freezing, packing and shipping the same. The meat is to be sold at a price barely covering costs. The first depots to be established are to be in Liverpool, Glasgow, Manchester and Cardiff.
