ARE THEY PROTECTIONIST?

Sip Robert Giffen, statist, in alette? to the Times, suggests holding an inquiry into how far self-governing colonies are really protectionist. H« declares the amount of the Empire's whole production receiving the shelter of tariffs does not exceed one threethousandth part, and allowing for pro* tecfcion one-hundredth part of Australia's production. Mr Giffen adds that the increased purchasing powers of the colonies from any reduction of their duties would not necessarily c« devoted to the purchase of additional British manufactures.
