THE STEAMER ESSEX.
IN A LEAKY CONDITION.
Press Association. Electric Telegraph, Oopyright, Received Jane 22, 0.30 a.m. Sydney, Jane 22. The departure of tbe steamer Essex to South Africa has been delayed owing to the discovery being made that she was making considerable water in the holds both fore and aft.
After the pumps were cleared an examination disclosed that the caulking of soams in some of the plates had given way, probably caused by straining in the rough weather experienced during the run from Wellington.
It was necessary to discharge a considerable portion of the cargo to remedy the defects, and the work of unloading will be begun to-day.
