SIR EDMUND BARTON'S VISIT TO THE POPE.

Melbourne, June 17.

A petition signed by thirty thousand Protestants has been presented to the Federal Honse of Representatives protesting against the visit of the Federal Premier, Sir Edmund Barton, to the Pope last year, and his acceptance of a medal.

The petition emphasises the statement that Sir Edmund Barton promised Catholics a greater measure of liberality and consideration than they enjoyed in other parts of the Empire.

Sir Edmund Barton made a personal explanation. He said the facts were that the Pope expressed gratification at the tolerance shown to all religions in Australia, which he hoped would long continue. To this, Sir Edmund replied that the Pope might rely that such toleration would continue.
