DROUGHT SEASONS IN AUSTRALIA.

THEORY AS TO THEIR CAUSE.

Sydney, April 14. Much interest is being shown in the Government Astronomer's cycle theory of the moon's influence on Australian seasons.

From careful records made by himself over a period of thirty-six years, supplemented by complete records going back to 1546, he (ixes the cycle period at nineteen years, divided into nine years of good rain* when the moon is going south, and then ten drought years when the moon's declination is north. -According to this, Australia is entering a period of fat years. Melbourne Observatory records for thirty six years support Mr Russell's theory, and Mr Clement Wragge gives it partial endorsement. He says it is an excellent working hypothesis, and offeis a way of soiviDg the question of weather-forecasting. He is convinced that the range of declination of the moon affects the atmosphere by drawing to higher levels, where vapours are more readily condensed or the reverse; but planetary and other influences must also be taken into consideration.
