In consequence of the frequent and severe eruptions of Mont Pelee, practically the whole of the north of Martinique has been declared uninhabitable.
The townships have been transferred to the southern districts of'the island.
Sydney, September 30
Eastern files bring details of the volcanic eruption at the island of Torishlma, in the Bonin group, early in the present month. Huge volumes of smoke and sand were emitted from the centre of the island, the shape of which was entirely changed.
There were a hundred and sixty residents on tho island, the fate of
.whom is unknown.
