Joseph Churches, a very old resi dent, formerly in business as a merchant and subsequently proprietor of the Empire Hotel, died on Saturday night after a- long and lingering illness.

Mabel Ralph, aged five, died suddenly at Denniston through drinking a bottle of cough mixture. Dunedin, September 29.
Jacob Graham, farm laborer, was found hanged in a hut oa tbe north side of Mount Cargill. He is supposed to have been dead about a week.
Hawera, September 29.
A few days ago an old man named Leys was found in an unconscious state in the bash near Opunake. He was taken to Opunake, where he was medically attended, but news deceived this morning states that he is dead. Wairoa, September 29.
Thomas Bailey, captain of the cutter Eleanor, was found dead in his cabin
yesterday.
